Dr José Belo Chipenda

The Rev. Dr. José Belo Chipenda was called back home on January, 10, 2024, in Sherbrooke, Canada.

He was the loving husband of Eva Joao Miguel de Carvalho and the father of Selma Teresa (Samuel Vauvert) and the late Gilberto Jesse.

He was the brother of  the late Daniel, the late Clara Ngeve, Duarte Morais, and Armindo Jimbe.

The Chipenda-De Carvalho family joins the Evangelical Congregational Church in Angola (IECA), the United Church of Canada, the All Africa Conference of Churches and the World Council of Churches in inviting you to celebrate the life of Rev Chipenda.

Africa and the Global ecumenical movement have lost one of their dear sons of the soil. Indeed a great tree has fallen.

The Rev. Dr. Chipenda, José Belo was born on October 9, 1929 in Bailundo, Huambo, Angola.

He was ordained in 1956 by the Evangelical Church in Angola.  He will be remembered for many things. Some of us had an opportunity to work alongside this great man. An African ecumenist who worked tirelessly for justice and peace in the world.

He served in many ecclesiastical roles which included the following: pastor of the Evangelical Congregational Church, Lobito, Angola. Travelling secretary, National Student Christian Federation, United States, 1964-1965; foreign student secretary, World Student Christian Federation, Geneva, 1966-1969; secretary for Africa, World Student Christian Federation, Nairobi, Kenya, 1969-1973; secretary program to combat racism, World Council Churches, Geneva, 1973-1980; director, Center for Study of Theology and Culture, Lobito, 1980-1985; general secretary, Angola Council of Churches, Luanda, 1985-1987; general secretary, All Africa Conference Churches, Nairobi, since 1987 – 1998

Visitation will be held at the Plymouth Trinity United Church, 380 Dufferin St., Sherbrooke, QC, on Saturday January 27, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 12:30 PM.  The funeral service will be at 12:30, followed by the burial at the Elmwood Cemetery, Sherbrooke, QC.

The Church service will be held in Sherbrooke, Canada on Saturday January 27th at Plymouth-Trinity United Church.

An online Memorial Service for the Global community will be held on Monday January 22nd. Details bellow.

The worship service is scheduled to run for 90 minutes, and will include simultaneous translation into English, French and Portuguese.

You are invited to say in the Zoom meeting following the formal worship service, for a more informal time of sharing.
