Ms Rachel Landry

Sherbrooke, March 7, 2024

1934-2024

Rachel (Rachelle) Landry, of Sherbrooke, Quebec, passed away peacefully on March 7th, 2024 shortly before her 90th birthday.

Rachel was born on March 15th, 1934 in Natashquan, Quebec and was the third youngest of 10 children. She showed strength throughout her childhood as she was orphaned at age 4 and was raised by her siblings. At age 13, she went to boarding school where she obtained a teaching certificate. She gained independence when she was 18 and began teaching at a remote one-room schoolhouse in Blanc-Sablon. She married Raymond Girard in 1955 and due to his military career they moved often, including several years living in Europe which she enjoyed thoroughly and which gave her inspiration.

She was a free spirit who embraced the constant change in her life and experienced everything to the fullest degree. She was known for her vivacious and lively spirit, generosity and heart, regal sense of style, and love of life and laughter. She was a talented and passionate artist, incredibly creative by nature, and excelled at painting and quilting among other pursuits.

Rachel was a proud mother of three, Michael (Eleanor Goosen), Sonya (John Parker) and Arlene (Guillaume Neron), and a beloved grandmother to sixteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her deeply adored daughter, Arlene, with whom she is now lovingly reunited.

Despite hardship in her later years, her sense of humour and playfulness always remained intact. She spent her final days wishing the joy of living to everyone encountered. Her family has found comfort knowing she is at peace and will miss her very much.

A celebration of life will be held at Steve L. Elkas Funeral Home, 4230 Bertand-Fabi Street in Sherbrooke, Quebec on March 17th, 2024 at 2 pm. The celebration will be livestreamed via this link:
